Brief History Of Knitting
Knitting as a means of assembling yarns to make fabrics was introduced into INDIA during the beginning of the last century. The first cotton knitting unit in India was established in 1893 and woolen unit in 1902. The knitting industry, in 21st century in India produces a wide range of products. The types of yarn used and the types of end products knitted from these yarns. The production of cotton knitting yarn between the years 1971 and 1983 in the country has increased. The shares of synthetic knitting goods Were negligible. The export of woolen & cotton knit goods have increased over the few years. There is tremendous scope for improving productivity in both by machinery and labour. As far as machine productivity is concerned, India made knitting machines have fewer number of feeders per inch. A typical Indian circular knitting machine of, say 18″ diameters has about 26 feeders whereas an equivalent Europian machine has about 50 feeders, thus doubling the productivity of the machines for the same machine speed. The 21st century has seen a resurgence of knitting. The resurgence coincided with the growth of the internet as well as “Handmade knitting revolution and interest in Die craft”. However, the knitting machine has undergone a lot of changes in machinery and improved productivity. Now, the knitting industry in India has an extreamly bright future. Knitting industry should gear itself upto the manufacture of synthetic and blended knit goods.

I take the opportunity to introduce our unit ‘NIRMA KNITTING CENTRE’ which was started journey as a small venture in a small room – early ninety. Toady, we are about many hundred, and having also some mini wool work clusters where interventions of our organisation made them marching ahead. These clusters are the result of keeping in mind the ideas of Gandhiji whose contribution to the reconstruction of Indian village is unforgettable. We started our journey to work among the under privileged and distressed women of surrounding areas with traditional Hand Knitting Machine. Our vision is always to infuse rural women by helping them to become matured owner of an enterprise who can ready to accept every challenges in the present scenario by giving them all support. We give maximum importance to impart in depth specialised training. Our uncompromising commitment has always been as to excellence to build a monument of quality Our unit has reasons to congratulate itself having became one of the largest employment generators in rural Bengal in this sector. It is a challenge to grow and grow with quality. We are in the business of putting other women into business and enabling them to earn a daily income. I am a firm believer in the extra ordinary power that every women holds with herself and know that she has the potential to empower herself to fulfill her own dreams with determination, courage, having understood and accepted and arriving at the conclusion that only women can be expected to understand the women. The strict adherence to schedule in respect of the production, timely payment of wages, maintaining product quality, has been the hallmark. Transparency – which is the call of the hour. We are actively organising workshops, awareness camps in collaboration with the Govt. departments and N.G.Os. besides our own ventures throughout the year. For the research in product development we want to access the internet to download and upload information quickly and accurately. ‘Nirma’ has envisioned clear-cut expansion plans. We can not express our gratitude in word to the many VIPs, dignitaries, honourable people who visited our unit users, staff of KVIC/KVIB who visited several times and provided us helpful guidance and ideas. We would specially acknowledge the devotion of the workmen / women engaged at our unit. I would like to get suggestion from all corners for the improvement of our unit who may also pay visit at our unit at any day, any time.
